I had some thoughts and just felt inspired to share those with you. I have almost reached the one year mark in my new job position. This last year has been filled with changes and finding ways to pivot my knowledge and grow my skills. If you would have asked me in October 2024 if I had found my joy I would have laughed at you and said “No!” I was so scared of being stuck and looking for ways to allow my creativity blend with my job to bring me joy. I tried so many different things over the years to search for that joy and always was pushing to try to “do more” in the hopes to feeling that purpose and excitement about my job. Don’t get my wrong, I loved those extra things that I did and what I learned and I was happy/content for a short minute.
If you are reading this and feeling like you have lost that sparkle and happiness from your work, don’t give up hope. There is a role for you that will bring that happiness and fulfillment.
Be Open to New Possibilities
Go after that job or position that you want, even if you feel like it is a big change from what you are currently doing. You can always pull on other experiences and talents to justify your ability to be best candidate for that position. Sometimes the next best thing for you isn’t the same job title you have now and you can go after that next opportunity.
Don’t Be Afraid to Pivot
It can be terrifying to shift your focus and expertise from one area into something new, but there are always ways to tie your knowledge. Being able to utilize your skills you have honed and practiced in new and creative ways makes you adaptable and helps make you the best fit for that job. You might be surprised on the ways you are able to draw that previous knowledge in your new role.
Lean Into Your Skills
We all have natural skills and talents where we excel. Some jobs allow to use those more than others. Sometimes that joy returns when you are able to use your specific skills more often and they are an important part of your day to day work. If that is missing then it is often more emotionally draining and you feel less fulfilled by that position.
You are smart, creative, a hard-worker and an asset to any team you join. Don’t be afraid to go after your joy! You never know where you might find it, but it is out there and if you are open to new possibilities you might just discover that joy in an unexpected place.
Having fun giving a nutrition presentation to students at Miami University in Ohio.
